National Influenza Week Observed December 2-8

National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW), is a national awareness week focused on highlighting the importance of the flu vaccine.The 2017-2018 influenza season was the worst in decades, resulting in high rates of death and hospitalizations. Urgent care clinicians are on the front lines of the battle against flu. At the height of last season, flu accounted for 7% of visits to urgent care centers.  

UCA has gathered one-click resources for health care professionals to assist in communicating about the importance of vaccination.

  • Read this Special Edition of UCAccess sponsored by Global Academy for Medical Education featuring lessons learned from last season written by UCA's College of Urgent Care Medicine® members Christopher Chao, MD and Joseph Toscano, MD. 
  • Visit the UCA website for the Antibiotic Stewardship & Patient Education toolkit with helpful resources and tools for clinicians, practice managers and patients as during flu season as many patients request antibiotics. 
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website has more resources for patients and healthcare providers.
  • Review the article An Urgent Care Approach to Influenza-Before Onset in the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine. This is the first of a two-part series. 
  • UCA members have free access to the UCA Public Relations Toolkit with a library of resources of key messages, valuable guides and pre-designed ready-to-post social media images, including flu awareness.
  • UCA Board President Sean McNeeley, MD, FCUCM, was interviewed in this story for on whether to get the flu shot when sick and this story explaining what to keep in mind if getting a flu vaccine later in the season and this story explaining who should not get the flu shot. All three pieces are targeted for consumers and ideal for sharing on social media.
