Overview of the On-Demand Healthcare Sector - Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 1PM CST

This course will cover the structure of the On-Demand Healthcare Sector, including a breakdown of participant categories that make up the sector, such as urgent care, retail clinics, primary care on-demand, telemedicine, and employer clinics. Within those categories the course will identify the major players, investors, growth drivers and high-level trends.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish between ownership structures for the retail clinic versus urgent care markets.
  • Describe an addressable market as applied to on-demand medicine.
  • Explain on-demand medicine saturation.
  • List drivers behind ownership models in the on-demand medicine space
  • Recognize go-to-market strategies behind major operators, including CVS/Aetna, Optum and the large urgent care chain operators.

Presenter Information: Tom Charland 

Tom Charland is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Merchant Medicine, LLC, an urgent care management consulting and development firm. Charland was senior vice president of strategy and business development at MinuteClinic. 

Additionally, Tom introduced the concept of ConvUrgentCare®, the mingling of operating tactics from convenient care (retail clinics), urgent care, work site clinics, primary care and telemedicine. He hosts the annual ConvUrgentCare® Strategy Symposium and publishes a monthly newsletter and detailed market report called The ConvUrgentCare® Report. 

He has been quoted often on the subject of on-demand medicine in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Fox News, Dow Jones, and Bloomberg. He also speaks frequently on the subject at investment research meetings and hospital strategy conferences throughout the year. 

Prior to starting Merchant Medicine, Tom was executive director of the National Association for Ambulatory Care; the CEO of Digital Cyclone Inc., a weather technology company that is now a subsidiary of Garmin; and managing director of the application development division at Control Data Systems, a software development and systems integrator. 

Charland grew up in Rhode Island, is a 1980 graduate of the Boston University College of Communications, and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Urgent Care Association (UCA).

CUCMP Credit Information:

This webinar is required as part of the CUMCP program and fulfills the General Operations domain while providing learners the opportunity to earn 1 live CUMCP credit (attendance will be verified). The CUMCP program requires that 37 of the 60 credits be live credits. Live credits may be earned through attending webinars and CUCMP sessions at UCA’s annual spring convention and expo. Once verified you will have access to the CUCMP quiz to complete the credit and survey. In order to earn credit, the CUCMP quiz must be passed and the survey completed. You must earn a score of 80% on the quiz and will be given 3 attempts to do so.
