2019 Urgent Care Foundation Award Recipients


2019 Award recipients will be recognized April 8, 2019 during the Urgent Care Foundation Awards Ceremony which will take place during the Urgent Care Convention & Expo, April 7-10, 2019 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. Congratulations to the following award recipients:


Advocacy Award

North East Regional Urgent Care Association (NERUCA) Government Affairs Committee for their quick action to defeat the legislation H.B. 4639 in the summer of 2018 in Massachusetts which would have set a troubling national precedent of taxing urgent care and retail centers around the country. This Committee, chaired by Jonathan Halpert, MD, works tirelessly on behalf of urgent care centers in the northeast U.S.

The Advocacy Award is awarded to an Individual, organization, or company for legislative or regulatory advocacy for urgent care on a state or national level. 



Lifetime Membership Awards

Alan Ayers, MBA, MAcc, has over 12 years experience in strategic planning, business development, clinical operations, sales/marketing and customer service for urgent care, occupational medicine, and primary care facilities of all sizes. Ayers serves as Chief Executive Officer of Velocity Urgent Care, which operates centers across the Commonwealth of Virginia, and also as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives for Practice Velocity, LLC, the nation's largest service provider to the urgent care industry.  A prolific and award-winning writer, Ayers is practice management editor for The Journal of Urgent Care Medicine (JUCM), and has contributed nearly 500 original articles, blog entries and presentations on urgent care-related subjects.  Ayers has recently served on the Board of Directors of the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and for eight years, served the member base as UCA's Practice Management Content Advisor.


Steve Sellars, MBA, is the CEO of Premier Health.  Premier Health owns and operates 40 urgent care centers through multiple health system joint-venture partnerships and provides management services and support for all affiliated organizations. Steve has approximately 25 years of healthcare management experience, including eight years in the managed care industry and five years with one of the largest health systems in the Gulf South. Steve has worked exclusively in urgent care management since 2004, growing Premier Health by more than 500% since 2010. Steve was the 2016-2017 Board President of the Urgent Care Association (UCA) and has served as UCA Secretary and Chair of the Education Committee. Steve is the Vice-Chair of the Baton Rouge Primary Care Collaborative, a board member for a multi-site rehabilitation company, a member of the Medical Group Management Association, and an adjunct faculty member at Our Lady of the Lake College.

Significant contributions of an individual to UCA are recognized with awarding of lifetime membership. The awardee will be granted complimentary lifetime membership in UCA as well as complimentary registration to the UCA Urgent Care Convention & Expo the year he or she receives the award.


Outstanding Achievement Award

John Kulin, DO, FACEP is Chief Executive Officer/Chief Medical Officer of the Urgent Care Group in New Jersey. The Urgent Care Group provides Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine services to a large part of Ocean County New Jersey. He has been working in Urgent Care/Occupational Medicine since 1992; was the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Southern Ocean County Hospital from 1998 to 2005; Medical Director of Occupational Medicine for Atlanticare from 2006-2008; serves as the Board President of the Northeast Regional Urgent Care Association (NERUCA), a chapter of the Urgent Care Association. 


Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes significant clinical, managerial and/or administrative achievements in the field of urgent care medicine that have had an impact on the industry. 


Rising Stars in Urgent Care Award

Benjamin Barlow, MD, currently serves as Chief Medical Officer of American Family Care, the nation’s leading provider of urgent care and occupational medicine, with more than 190 medical centers and 600 in-network physicians caring for nearly 3 million patients a year. Dr. Barlow joined AFC in 2018, after more than a decade of service to our country in the United States Air Force. During his distinguished military career, Dr. Barlow was continuously assigned roles of increasing responsibility, including overseas deployment in support of combat troops and as the Emergency Room Medical Director at Langley Air Force Base – the busiest ER in the Air Force. In the final assignment of his military medical career, he directly served the health care needs of three current or former U.S. Presidents. Today he is actively involved with the Antibiotic Stewardship and UCAPAC Board.

The Rising Stars in Urgent Care Award are awarded to those new in the urgent care industry. These individuals represent the best and brightest newcomers in the industry, must have a proven track record of leadership, innovation, dedication to community and the urgent care industry. 


Quality and Safety Award

Jonathan Zipkin, MD, is currently the Associate Medical Director for Northwell Health – GoHealth Urgent Care, responsible for clinical leadership across their New York City based urgent care centers. In addition, Dr. Zipkin serves as the Regional Medical Informatics Officer for the New York Market, sits on the company’s national Clinical Steering Committee, and serves as the chair of the national Quality Committee which is responsible for the company’s Quality Initiative. 

The Quality and Safety Award recognizes an individual, organization or exhibitor for significant efforts that focus on improved quality and safety in the field of urgent care medicine.
