2020 Urgent Care Foundation Award Recipients

2020 Award recipients will be recognized May 4, 2020 during the Urgent Care Foundation Awards Ceremony which will take place at Caesar's Palace during the Urgent Care Convention & Expo (May 3-6, 2020 at the Paris Hotel) in Las Vegas. 2020 Humanitarian Award Winner

Lynda Gerberg, MD, is a Pediatrician specializing in Urgent Care and Sports Medicine. She is the Lead Pediatrician at Cohen Children's Northwell Health-GoHealth Pediatric Urgent Care since 2017. Dr. Gerberg is also highly committed to providing medical and humanitarian care for those impacted by natural disasters and humanitarian crises. As a vital member of the volunteer medical organization, Love 4, Dr. Gerberg has been active in national and international medical missions, mobilizing and leading medical teams into areas recovering from natural disasters, such as Texas, Puerto Rico & The Bahamas. Dr. Gerberg and her team set up clinics and provide medical care, supplies and support for those affected by these natural disasters, with their latest medical relief efforts directed to the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. Dr. Gerberg is also a founding member of the David Michael Foundation, a non profit organization whose mission is to help combat the global opioid epidemic. 

She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Gerberg further sub-specialized in Sports Medicine at Harvard Medical School, where she was a team physician for the Boston Ballet. She also worked as attending physician at the Urgent Care Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Gerberg returned to Long Island to join Cohen Children's Medical Center Northwell Health to develop the Pediatric Sports Medicine Program. Dr. Gerberg has been an attending in the Fast Track/Urgicenter at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center-Northwell Health Emergency Department since 2007 taking care of patients as well as actively being involved in resident and medical student education. She is an Assistant Professor at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, 

Dr. Gerberg has made it part of her life's work to help during immediate medical disaster crises and as well as to help provide positive change for people's lives through ongoing medical care, health education and support.

Awarded for significant medical volunteer work by an individual, organization, or exhibitor which has a positive impact on a national or international cause or event. Nominees must be members of UCA.


2020 Lifetime Membership Award Winners

Eric McDonald was the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of DocuTAP, a dynamic HIT company based in Sioux Falls, S.D. A visionary entrepreneur with a dream, McDonald predicted the integral part handheld devices would play in healthcare with the increasing adoption and evolution of technology. He began development of the DocuTAP application in his basement shortly after college, and with the help of angel investors, launched the company in 2000. The ability to stay ahead of technology trends and a commitment to patients, providers, and his employees, has elevated the company as a leader in the on-demand healthcare space. DocuTAP has grown significantly over the last 17 years, including the 2017 acquisition of Clockwise.MD, a patient engagement solutions company. With regional offices in Atlanta, St. Louis, and Springfield, Mo., more than 300 employees, and 2,800 clinics across the country using its technology solution, DocuTAP is the leader in the on-demand healthcare technology space and demonstrates its commitment to patients and providers by staying ahead of healthcare technology trends and developing solutions to increase efficiency and collaboration.


Pam Sullivan, MD, MBA, FACP, PT, worked as an attending physician in the emergency department at Rochester General Hospital for 19 years, served on the Medical and Dental Staff Board and Executive Committee for eight years as well as many other hospital and community committees. In 2011, Dr. Sullivan transitioned to the Medical Director at Rochester Immediate Care in Webster, NY. She served as Medical Director to multiple Emergency Departments, speaker at multiple educational events and remains active with the NY Chapter of the American College of Physicians where she is a Laureate Award winner.  She earned her MBA from the University of Tennessee Haslam School of Business. Dr. Sullivan is presently a Chief Clinical Officer for Landmark Health. She is Past-President for the UCA and continues to serve any on multiple UCA committees.

Significant contributions of an individual (or individuals) to UCA are recognized with awarding of lifetime membership. The awardee will be granted complimentary lifetime membership in UCA as well as complimentary registration to the UCA Urgent Care Convention & Expo the year he or she receives the award.





 2020 Outstanding Achievement Award Winner

David Stern, MD, CPC, is a founding board member of UCA and has devoted the past 30 years to urgent care medicine.  David was a partner in physicians immediate care, where he and his partners grew their chain of urgent care clinics to 20 centers before selling to llr and anthem in 2012.  Over the years David has been an investor, buyer and seller of various urgent care businesses, comprising over 150 urgent care centers.  His firm has provided start up consulting services to over 300 startup urgent care centers. In 2002, David and his partners founded practice velocity, an electronic medical records (emr) and practice management solution.   In 2019, warburg pincus merged docutap and practice velocity to form experity with david as CEO. Today, over 4,500 urgent care centers use software and/or services provided by experity.  David currently serves on the board of directors of the urgent care foundation board.

Recognizes significant clinical, managerial and/or administrative achievements in the field of urgent care medicine that have had an impact on the industry. Nominees may be an individual, an organization, or a company and must be a member of UCA.


2020 Quality and Safety Award Winners

Frank Illuzzi, MD, is board-certified in emergency medicine, and the immediate past chief medical officer at CityMD, a regional urgent care group with 130+ locations throughout the New York city metro area.  He currently serves as EVP of quality and medical education, and maintains an active clinical practice caring for patients.  Prior to joining CityMD, Dr. iIluzzi was the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT, and held an academic appointment as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Frank Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. During his tenure in hospital based care he served in numerous clinical, academic, and leadership roles. Dr. Illuzzi is an active member of the UCA Antibiotic Stewardship Committee and active participant in the UCA/Urgent Care Foundation summits on antibiotic stewardship and influenza, contributed to the Urgent Care Foundation’s diabetes screening research study, and helped create CityMD's postgraduate urgent care fellowship training program.




Amanda Montalbano, MD, MPH, FAAP, is the Director of Scholarly Activities for the division of urgent care and serves as the Medical Director of Patient and Family Engagement at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. she is currently an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Research Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Amanda is one of the leading researchers in pediatric urgent care, managing work groups across the country publishing research and quality improvement around patient experience and acute care. She is a founding Co-Chair for the Academic Pediatric Association Urgent Care Special Interest Group and the Chair of Research for the Society of Pediatric Urgent Care. She serves as a clinical resource for pediatric urgent care medicine for UCA as well as an expert in performance improvement, quality improvement, and patient experience. Her career has been dedicated to raising the academic profile of urgent care and its value in the medical neighborhood.

Recognizes an individual, organization or exhibitor for significant efforts that focus on improved quality and safety in the field of urgent care medicine.


The Becky Burress Unsung Hero Award

With this year's passing of our colleague and friend Becky Burress, UCA in conjunction with NERUCA will be recognizing her life, service and passion at the 2020 Foundation Celebration. She will be the inaugural recipient of a new award that has been created in her honor, The Becky Burress Unsung Hero Award, which will be presented to her posthumously at the event. While Becky was certainly loved and appreciated during her years with UCA and NERUCA, she was the first to provide credit and recognition elsewhere. This award will be a permanent tribute to her career contributions and the essential efforts of so many dedicated professionals in our industry.
