Urgent Care Association Announces 2019 Award Recipients
Industry Leaders will be Honored at the Association’s 2019 Convention & Expo

WARRENVILLE, IL, January 24, 2019 – The Urgent Care Association (UCA) has announced its 2019 award recipients for advocacy, lifetime membership, outstanding achievement, rising star and quality & safety. Each year, the UCA recognizes and presents awards to members and worthy recipients for their significant achievements on behalf of the association, for their communities and in the field of urgent care. Candidates are nominated by both association members and non-members, and selected from the UCA Awards Committee recommendations followed by final approval from the Board of Directors.

Congratulations to these 2019 award recipients who will be recognized on Monday, April 8 during the Foundation Celebration, benefiting the Urgent Care Foundation, during the 2019 UCA Convention & Expo in West Palm Beach:

  • Advocacy Award: The North East Regional Urgent Care Association (NERUCA) Government Affairs Committee for their quick action to defeat the legislation H.B. 4639 in the summer of 2018 in Massachusetts. This legislation would have set a troubling national precedent of taxing urgent care and retail centers around the country. This Committee, chaired by Jonathan Halpert, MD, works tirelessly on behalf of urgent care centers in the northeast U.S.
  • Lifetime Memberships: Alan Ayers, MBA, MAcc, of Williamsburg, VA, CEO of Velocity Urgent Care, VP of Strategic Initiatives for Practice Velocity, LLC, and practice management editor for The Journal of Urgent care Medicine (JUCM). Mr. Ayers has served UCA in several roles, including Practice Management Content Advisor and Board Member, and has contributed nearly 500 original articles on the subject of urgent care; AND Steve Sellars, MBA, of Baton Rouge, LA, CEO of Premier Health, which operates over 40 urgent care centers through multiple health system joint-venture partnerships. Mr. Sellars has served as UCA Board President, Board Secretary, and Chair of the Education Committee.
  • Outstanding Achievement Award: John Kulin, DO, FACEP, of Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ, for his active leadership and staunch advocacy for the entire urgent care industry.  Dr. Kulin is the CEO of the Urgent Care Group and serves as the Board President of the Northeast Regional Urgent Care Association (NERUCA), a chapter of the Urgent Care Association.
  • Rising Star Award:  Benjamin Barlow, MD, of Birmingham, AL. joined American Family Care in June, 2018 as its Chief Medical Officer. He is actively involved with the Antibiotic Stewardship and UCAPAC Board.
  • Quality & Safety Award: Jonathan Zipkin, MD, of New York, NY, for his support of the progression of evidence-based, quality medicine and safety across the urgent care industry and the countless other efforts he makes to improve the industry as a whole. Dr. Zipkin is the Associate Medical Director for Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care and serves as the Regional Medical Informatics Officer for the New York Market, sitting on several national steering committees responsible for clinical quality.

“The 2019 UCA Award Recipients are a wonderful representation of the urgent care industry” said Laurel Stoimenoff, PT, CHC, and chief executive officer of UCA. “These individuals and organizations are passionately committed to providing access to safe, quality medical care, and in many cases addressing unmet needs in communities across the entire country.  They embody the standard of excellence we strive for as the association that serves as their gateway to better.”
