Urgent Care Association to Host First Annual Fall Clinical Consortium
Healthcare experts will discuss antibiotic stewardship and influenza treatment in the urgent care setting
WARRENVILLE, Ill., Sept. 18, 2019 – The Urgent Care Association (UCA), in collaboration with the Urgent Care Foundation and the College of Urgent Care Medicine, will host the first annual Fall Urgent Care Clinical Consortium September 22-24 in Denver, Colo. The Consortium will address antibiotic stewardship in the urgent care setting as well as influenza diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Bringing together public health organizations with top urgent care executives, industry partners, experts and other stakeholders, the meetings will address advancements and innovations in the on-demand healthcare industry.
“During and subsequent to these meetings, industry decision makers dedicated to quality care and clinical outcomes will collaborate on strategies to improve antibiotic prescribing and assess the impact of new influenza policies and clinical guidelines on patients,” said Laurel Stoimenoff, CEO of UCA. “Thought leaders will share the latest research, innovation and best practices urgent care centers can adopt to better meet patient needs as we head into cold and flu season this fall. Urgent care plays a significant role in caring for patients during the flu season. Early intervention is key, and the typical seven-day-a-week access provided by urgent care centers elevates their role in caring for this population.”
Attendees will include representatives from organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Antibiotic Resistance Action Center Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, Abbott, Experity, and clinical and administrative representatives from large and small urgent care organizations across the country.
Antibiotic Stewardship Symposium
On day one of the event, Antibiotic Stewardship Symposium participants will identify goals and solutions for urgent care centers to improve antibiotic prescribing practices. The roundtable discussion will host industry experts with the shared goal to work together to produce realistic and actionable strategies to resolve potential gaps and promote industry accountability.
“Our objective for this roundtable is to establish quantifiable metrics, goals and milestones, as well as optimize clinical stewardship outcomes while minimizing resource utilization to influence real, tangible change,” said Stoimenoff. “We will work to improve upon the existing Urgent Care Action Plan by adding new strategies to meet the specific challenges and opportunities associated with small and medium-sized urgent care centers. These centers represent more than 60% of the urgent care industry.”
Led by the Urgent Care Foundation, the second symposium will focus on key learnings from the 2018-2019 influenza season and educate providers on new advancements in influenza treatments and diagnostics. Leaders will also examine the best communication strategies for raising public awareness to the signs of influenza infection, and the importance of seeking treatment within 48 hours.
“Urgent care centers treat a high volume of patients each year, specifically for influenza, underscoring the importance of staying on the forefront of new treatments and testing,” said Joe Toscano, MD, UCA clinical content advisor. “The latest tests and drug options are key to reducing exposure and shortening infection for millions of urgent care patients, which could have a tremendous impact on public health, co-morbidities and mortality rates associated with influenza.”
The Fall Clinical Consortium will take place in Denver, Colo., September 22-24, 2019, at the JW Marriot Cherry Creek. For more information on the event, please call the Urgent Care Foundation at 877-698-2262.
