Changes in ambulatory care delivery a hot topic

Members of the New York State Department of Health's Public Health and Health Planning Council debated changes to state oversight of retail clinics, urgent care centers and freestanding emergency departments on Wednesday, Nov. 20. They were assisted by spirited testimony from industry stakeholders against part-time hours for emergency departments. The proposed revisions will be voted on at the committee level on Dec. 4 before they go to the full council for a vote.
Urgent care facilities drew praise — and some surprise at their ubiquity. Jeffrey Kraut called PM Pediatrics, a chain of urgent care centers for children, "a great model" that "absolutely" cut emergency department usage. Assemblyman Dick Gottfried said his family members recently used urgent care facilities. State Sen. Kemp Hannon commented on the expansion of Premier Care on Long Island, with 15 sites in all. Urgent care centers "are here, and I don't know how to put the genie back in the bottle," he said.
Some 95 percent of urgent care centers are owned privately by doctors, and should be regulated no differently than other physician practices, said Dr. Marc Salzberg of Stat Health, which runs six centers. "Urgent care is the private practice of medicine," he said. "The only difference is, we are available."

Hospitals, clinics strive to keep viruses at bay

During cold and flu season, healthcare providers roll out an arsenal of common-sense tools to reduce exposure to doctors, nurses, staff members and patients. There is a real chance of getting sick at the doctor's office. Each year, 5 to 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu and end up in doctors' offices and urgent care centers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

UnityPoint Health's new Sunnybrook Medical Plaza offers a one-stop shop for outpatients. The opening of the two-story glass and masonry facility in late September put primary care physicians, various specialists and services such as urgent care, imaging and infusion under a single roof.
Private website touted as interim alternative to HealthCare.gov

Despite doubts from many, President Barack Obama remains confident that the technical glitches that overshadowed the launch of the federal health insurance exchange in October will be fixed by Nov. 30. Obama said while the site was getting better each week, supporters should remind their friends and family that HealthCare.gov isn't the only place consumers could enroll for insurance. He said enrollment could happen over the phone, in person and by mail. What Obama didn't mention was that there is also an alternative website where consumers could shop for plans. And it's gaining a lot of attention.
Equity group invests in Urgent Care of Connecticut

Urgent Care of Connecticut, which has seven clinics including ones in Norwalk, Ridgefield and Brookfield, received a growth equity investment from Pulse Equity Partners and the PineBridge Structured Capital team of PineBridge Investments. Already the largest provider of urgent care services in Connecticut with seven clinics, UCC currently operates the only privately owned Joint Commission accredited and Urgent Care Association of America certified clinics in New England. The company is prepared to expand its breadth of services, in addition to its geographic footprint, along with further operational and technological advances.
ASAP Urgent Care coming to Connecticut shoreline
A recent study showed that in most of Connecticut's emergency rooms, the wait exceeds the national average of 28 minutes. And that wait could get longer, some say, as the uninsured gain health insurance. Healthcare entrepreneur Traver Hutchins, the chief executive officer of ASAP Urgent Care, said his new company will help solve that problem for residents in nearby Madison and in surrounding towns. An urgent care center is due to open in early December at 146 Samson Rock Drive in Madison, Conn.
Immediate Health Care to open new clinic

It was almost five years ago that Grover Hershberger opened his first immediate care clinic. Now, he's preparing to open an east-side Immediate Health Care clinic at 5838 E. Central in Wichita, Kan. The new clinic can see patients quickly for injury, illness, physicals, X-rays and lab work, among other things.
Independent urgent care facility opens doors
Residents needing to see a doctor for minor illnesses and injuries have a new option in Chillicothe, Ohio. Dr. Syed Naqvi has opened his third Family Urgent Care since 2008. This latest center has seven exam rooms, lab capabilities, an additional room for procedures that can't be done in an exam room and will soon be getting X-ray capabilities.

American Family Care has opened its 40th clinic and its first in Florida at 4713 U.S. 90 in Pace. The clinics are designed, equipped and staffed to provide accessible primary care, urgent care, minor emergency treatment and occupational medicine. The Pace Clinic has 11 rooms and is staffed by physicians, a radiology technician and a nursing staff. It has high-tech, high-touch, digital X-ray, on-site lab testing and state-of-the-art diagnostics.
