|2014 Spring Convention Wrap-Up|
The 10th National Urgent Care Convention in Las Vegas concluded on Thursday, March 20, 2014. This year’s event attracted more than 1,100 attendees – one of the largest showings ever – comprising urgent care practitioners, center owners, administrators, managers, and investors from all over the world. The sold out Exhibit Hall also surpassed previous years’ records with 148 exhibiting companies – of which 60 were new this year – showcasing their products, services and technologies.
More than 50 percent of attendees gathered on Tuesday, March 18, to listen to the opening session. Keynote speaker James Kane enlightened and captivated the crowd with his presentation “The Loyalty Switch: How to Make Anyone Loyal to You, Patients, Providers, Partners, and more.” His presentation concluded with a surprise ending that left the audience in awe.
On Wednesday, March 19, members attended a luncheon to learn about the latest UCAOA activities and progress including the new committee structure and Board of Director candidate speeches. This year there was one incumbent, Dr. Roger Hicks, and six nominees: Gene Howell, Dr. John Kulin, Eric McDonald, Dr. Sean McNeeley, Catherine Paradiso, and David Wood. Electronic voting was utilized for the first time to allow members to vote on site or remotely, which increased voter participation. The election closed on Wednesday at 6pm and winners were announced shortly thereafter. Thank you to all the candidates and congratulations to the new members of the UCAOA Board of Directors: Dr. Roger Hicks, Dr. John Kulin, and Dr. Sean McNeeley.
The National Urgent Care Convention’s program this year was expanded and enhanced to better address the clinical and practice management education needs of a growing and diverse urgent care audience. Several participants became certified medical examiners listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) through the popular DOT training course and exam. Other highlights included panel discussions on urgent care mergers and acquisitions and healthcare reform as well as a sold out ticketed session on important and timely issues on coding (e.g. ICD-10.)
