Penn Medicine opened its first urgent care center in Philadelphia last month. Penn Urgent Care South Philadelphia, located in the Constitution Health Plaza on South Broad Street, had a soft opening in December but will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially unveil the center on January 23. According to Dr. Ronald Barg, executive director of Penn's physician practice group Clinical Care Associates, "This is all about improving access." They initially sought to improve access for patients at their primary care practices, but now the health system is working to address the same access issue by opening urgent care centers in areas not presently served by Penn Medicine primary care doctors. "If you look at a map, you didn't see much in South Philadelphia from Penn Medicine," he said. Barg noted that Penn Medicine does not have any specific number of urgent care centers it plans to open in the region; however, it will look at individual communities and determine the best strategy for ensuring access. "In some we may open an urgent care center, in some we may expand a primary care practice," he said. "In some areas we may do both or we may partner with an existing urgent care center."
